I found them both to be about equal length and found myself completing both in about hours or less despite what seems to be usually longer for both games (particularly Transistor which I think I might have completed faster than Bastion) So first of all, I played this and Transistor this weekend back to back. It seems that these games are probably best played blind, due to the way they tend to have strengths that are surprises (and are relatively short anyway.) I want to talk about some aspects of the design of this game and story/narrative elements. 2įirst I will say this thread contains spoilers. The artistic presentation and weapon variety were just enough to keep me bashing my way through until the credits. Overall, I found playing Bastion to be an interesting experience but I was ready for it to be over by the time I got to the end of the game. As cool as the narrator was, I didn't find myself particularly engaged in the story he was telling.I found that since the environments fade in and out of existence, I wasn't really motivated to explore. This is really more of a brawler than an RPG. The gameplay is fun at first but feels repetitive long before the game is over.Being able to upgrade weapons and change load-outs gives the player a lot of tactical options. The watercolor art style looks really nice. The dynamic narration is easily the most interesting an distinct feature of this game. While many people gush about this game, I came away with mixed feelings. I've been meaning to play Bastion after friends have been recommending it to me for years. I remember the stupid birds in the original Ninja Gaidens being the most frustrating assholes ever. I wanted to absolutely love it but after a while I was getting sick of the annoying birds that kept dive bombing me and levels with not a ton of variety.įor that matter, what is the deal with birds in games? They are ultra annoying and difficult to kill. For a less than 5 hour game it seemed to drag a bit. Ending was confusing which leads to little replay value.ĭon't get me wrong, I had fun with this game but toward the end I didn't know what in the hell was going on and just wanted to finish it.The ground coming up under you as you walk for some reason did not settle well with me. Falling off the floating platforms in every level. The Bastion is a cool place to upgrade items and potions.
